Senator Edward John Markey of Massachusetts was born in Malden, Massachusetts, on July 11, 1946. He graduated from Malden Catholic High School in 1964, earned a B.A. from Boston College in 1968, and a J.D. from Boston College Law School in 1972. Markey served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1968 to 1973. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives from 1973 to 1976. Elected as a Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976, he served from November 2, 1976, to July 15, 2013. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in a special election on June 25, 2013, and took office on July 16, 2013. He was reelected in 2014 and 2020.
