Representative Ami Bera of California was born in Los Angeles on March 2, 1965. He graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in La Palma, California, in 1983, earned a B.S. from the University of California, Irvine, in 1987, and received his M.D. from the same institution in 1991. Dr. Bera has served as a physician, professor, and associate dean at the University of California-Irvine School of Medicine from 2004 to 2007. He was the chief medical officer for Sacramento County from 1999 to 2004. After an unsuccessful bid for the One Hundred Twelfth Congress in 2010, he was elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred Thirteenth and six succeeding Congresses, beginning January 3, 2013.
