麻薩諸塞州聯邦參議員愛德華・約翰・馬基（Edward John Markey）於1946年7月11日出生於麻州莫爾登（Malden）。他於1964年自莫爾登天主教高中（Malden Catholic High School）畢業，1968年取得波士頓學院（Boston College）文學士（B.A.）學位，並於1972年自波士頓學院法學院（Boston College Law School）取得法學博士（J.D.）學位。馬基於1968年至1973年間在美國陸軍後備役服役。1973年至1976年，他擔任麻薩諸塞州眾議院（Massachusetts State House of Representatives）議員。1976年以民主黨籍當選美國聯邦眾議員，任期自1976年11月2日至2013年7月15日。2013年6月25日，他在參議員特別選舉中當選，並於2013年7月16日就任聯邦參議員；其後於2014年與2020年連任。
